The PEAS Farm - Learning about Local and Sustainable Agriculture PDF Print E-mail

Starting in a few weeks, as a graduate student in Environmental Studies at the University of Montana, I’m looking forward to getting muddy on a farm while interning for the Program in Ecological Agriculture and Sustainability (PEAS).

The PEAS Farm was started in 1996 by Garden City Harvest, a local nonprofit dedicated to “providing high-quality food to low-income people, offering education and training in ecologically conscious food production, and using their sites for the personal restoration of troubled youth and adults.”

Last year, the PEAS Farm grew over 18 tons of food for hunger agencies in Missoula, and 132 households bought produce shares in the Community Supported Agriculture program, all while providing a training ground for a new generation of agriculturalists.

So allow me to harvest a bounty of knowledge for you – from seed starting mixes in February to cover cropping in October, I’ll be posting here on Envirovore the elements of a successful, sustainable, and community-focused farm.

Look for posts on special farm projects too, like the school-cafeteria-to-pig program, and the tractor graduate students converted to run on straight vegetable oil.

See you in the greenhouse in a few weeks!

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
