Here in Montana, we're proud of our food banks. For 25 years, the Montana Food Bank Network has provided millions of pounds of food to more than 200 communities. Some of these food banks work closely with area farms to bring quality, fresh produce to people who need it most. Yet with a sluggish economy, food banks are hit hard as less people donate and more people find themselves needing help getting food on the table. Expensive fuel means that low-income folks sometimes choose between transportation (often to a low-paying job) and groceries. Combine this with inflation that outstrips wage growth. The four-minute documentary above tells how the Missoula Food Bank is handling these challenges and gives a glimpse into the lives of its clients and staff. Fuel costs affect the operations of a food bank as much as the homes of financially insecure families. Filling a diesel delivery truck this year costs the Missoula Food Bank $1,000 compared to $500 last year. And because transporation affects the price of every morsel of food these days, the Food Bank is seeing a 55% increase in staples like rice and pasta. "We're putting bandades on much larger wounds," says Missoula Food Bank development director Nick Roberts. Still, there are plenty of people grateful for the remedy. Sources: New West and Missoulian

Great article and documentary, bringing to light the need for supporing emergency food banks as well as greater, more deeply rooted problems that cause this need for increased visits to the food bank. The Missoula Food Bank is doing an excellent job addressing the food needs of Missoulians from all walks of life.
