'Tis the season for cherries and raspberries and other much-anticipated summer fruits. If you can get your mouth on organic blueberries, eat up, says a new study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The study, conducted by USDA and Rutgers Univesrity, found that organic blueberries contain significantly more antioxidants than conventional blueberries. Broken down, organic blueberries showed 50% more antioxidant activity, 67% more phenolics and 50% higher levels of anthocyanins (which give blueberries that dark blue color).

The evidence for the nutritional benefits of organic produce just keeps growing. In April we told you about the first in-depth review of scientific peer-reviewed literature (about 100 studies) to be conducted since 2003 on the benefits of organic versus conventional food.

Not only does organic fruit provide more nutrients, it helps reduce your intake of pesticide residues. A win-win, don't you think?

Blueberrys
written by Adam, July 27, 2008
Having grown up in Michigan, I started picking blueberry's for part time cash at the age of 12. Since then, I have always come to associate them with summer and fun times.
The problem is that in today's global economy, you can buy them in the middle of winter. Fresh to your grocer from Latin America. If you are willing to pay six dollars a pint, you can have blueberrys that have travelled over 5,000 miles and consumed more gasoline in the transport than I care to think about. Now that it's summer though, I can get them at the farmers market and I can get enough.

Picking for a winter havest
written by Robert Wood, July 29, 2008
Our family loves the fresh berries. We go out in the summer time and pick enough to freeze ourselves so that we can enjoy them in the winter months as well.

It is a great way to spend a day with the wife and kids, have some fun, and those berries on a hot bowl of cereal in December makes it all worth while.

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
