Can't Find Bargains at Whole Foods? Take a Tour. PDF Print E-mail

As food prices climb, some people are getting creative with their food choices. Others are frequenting high-end grocery stores less and conventional chains more. That means places like Whole Foods, known to some patrons as "whole paycheck," are seeing declining numbers in sales.

But even Whole Foods is getting creative during these lean times. (If you can call it creative.) The store is offering customers "budget-focused store tours," where an employee guides shoppers through the store and points out more affordable food items. Now, nothing against Whole Foods -- and I'm all about supporting the true cost of food -- but are these items that hard to find? If so, it might want to forget the tours and revisit its business plan.

A survey released last month found that 20 percent of shoppers have changed where they buy groceries because of the economy. Whole Foods has witnessed the shift, but is confident it still has the edge with customers committed to high quality food. And it says it's also providing better discounts and adding lower-priced store brands to its shelves.

Still, it will take more than a tour of inexpensive food and some discounts to convince the general public that Whole Foods is a bargain.

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
