Some folks in Wisconsin are rolling out a sweet initiative in a couple weeks. The "Wisconsin Eat Local Challenge" encourages state residents to sign a pledge to eat local food for 10 days, from September 5 - 14. And it's not your everyday "eat local" week. Participants are asked to sign up and track their progress online, as well as complete a follow-up survey. The website gives tips on tracking down local food, provides a blog for dialogue, and lists other resources and events related to local food. Wisconsinites have it made, really. I mean, with the plethora of local cheese and beer options, and the longish growing season for vegetables, too, choosing Wisconsin items in the grocery store and farmers market should elicit pure pleasure. As higher oil prices squeeze our style of living, we will learn to find local, cheaper food. We may even go as far as baking our own bread, brewing our own beer, growing our own veggies and for some folks, raising a few chickens! We are slowly gliding into a time of fewer resources and more expensive energy. The limits being placed on us are not political. Nature and the environment are asking us politely to slow down, consume less, produce better and more necessary things that last longer, throw away less, and live better through technologies and the education about her. Some of us will oblige, some will resist. Those that resist will go the way of the Dodo bird. Those that oblige will live a gentler, more rewarding and less materialistic life, albeit a successful one!

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.
Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
