Hong Kong Mulls Ban on Fish Trawlers PDF Print E-mail

Hong Kong is considering a ban on fishing trawlers in its local waters. Why? Because fish harvests are currently 30% above sustainable levels. 550 trawlers operate in the Hong Kong area, and the government is considering buying out some of those trawlers and retraining fishermen to farm fish or employ more sustainable fishing tactics.

The fishing industry in Hong Kong supports 12,000 jobs, so opposition to the ban is inevitable. But these days, fish populations are plummeting and fishermen are ending up netting premature fish which may be reducing populations to levels where they can't repopulate.

Hong Kong is considering other ways of dealing with the situation including capping the number of boats that can be in the waters and limiting new trawlers instead of simply banning them.
