British Urbanites Turn to Farming PDF Print E-mail

In the UK, more people are moving to the countryside than are leaving—which is something that hasn't been the case for generations. British urbanites who have been tending to city gardens are moving to the country to cultivate small farms and raise chickens—which is one of the fastest growing hobbies.

In Derbyshire, a company called New Land Owner (newlandowner.co.uk) has started up classes on everything from how to run a farm to how to deal with land issues. Incidentally, the families that are moving to the countryside happen to be young families with children, which means there's a chance such small level, sustainable farms will be passed down the generations if the kids of these “greenshifters” maintain an interest.

Despite waning property values in the cities, land in the country is maintaining its value. This, of course, makes some land less affordable for start-up farmers but apparently the people who can afford countryside tracts are farming them, unlike here in Montana and other parts of the states where farm land is often bought up for trophy homes or subdivided into gated communities.

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
