Newcastle Bans Battery Eggs PDF Print E-mail

The Newcastle city council in England has just banned battery eggs from school lunch menus, staff restaurants, banqueting and hospitality outlets and meals supplied to the elderly.

Earlier this year, animal welfare activists and Labour councillors pushed for this ban in a demonstration in front of the council which would require that all eggs in these venues be from free-range chickens. Switching over to free range eggs, at least for schools would cost an extra 1,550 Euros per year, but that cost would come down to only an extra 885 Euros due to a better distribution contract.

So far battery (as in, being kept in cages) chicken and turkey meat is not banned. But the council is looking into banning these meats as well, and even looking at cakes and noddles that still use battery eggs. Additionally, the council is reviewing their contracts with halal meat which animal rights activists have complained about due to the way animals are slaughtered.

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
