Although media reports say scientists are conflicted on the impacts of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical widely used in plastics, the evidence for its toxicity has been convincing enough for Canada to propose banning the chemical from baby bottles and Wal-Mart and Toys "R" Us to phase it out of products. Now, three state attorneys general (CT, NJ, and DE) are asking 11 companies to stop using BPA in baby bottles and baby formula containers, including Avent America Inc., Disney First Years, Gerber, Mead Johnson, and Playtex Products Inc. Though FDA hasn't banned the chemical, it has provided consumers "tips" for avoiding exposure, such as not using plastic containers with recycling number "7." Some studies show that BPA leaches from plastic into food, a cause for concern considering the chemical has been linked to some cancers. If the FDA is compelled to help us avoid BPA, isn't taking full precautions warranted? Surely these "tips" stem from known risks that are worth protecting the public from.
