UN Says Organic Farming Could Feed Africa PDF Print E-mail

A UN study released today says organic farming practices have significantly increased yields in Africa. Labeled as a luxury of the west and niche market by some, UN leaders now say that "the potential contribution of organic farming to feeding the world may be far higher than many had supposed."

The study included an analysis of more than 100 projects in 24 African countries. The data shows that yields more than doubled where organic or "near-organic" practices were used, and yield jumped an astounding 128 percent in east Africa alone.

Yields aren't the only bonus, of course. The study says that organic farming has improved soil quality (fertility, water retention, and drought tolerance) and helped rural communities bypass environmental problems that come with synthetic chemical and fertilizer use, as well as transgenic crops.

Some leaders in Africa have long thought that these industrial inputs were necessary for closing the food gap in Africa, a crisis that's been established through an increasing population, decreased rainfall and soil fertility, lack of access to food aid, and higher food prices. With climate change expected to impact food security even more, farmers will need reliable, locally adapted farming practices that keep them independent from inputs purchased abroad, the prices of which are skyrocketing.

Leasing is a process by which a firm can obtain the use of a certain fixed assets for which it must pay a series of contractual, periodic, tax deductable payments. The lessee is the receiver of the services or the assets under the lease contract and the lessor is the owner of the assets. The relationship between the tenant and the landlord is called a tenancy, and can be for a fixed or an indefinite period of time (called the term of the lease). The consideration for the lease is called rent.

Under normal circumstances, an owner of property is at liberty to do what they want with their property, including destroy it or hand over possession of the property to a tenant. However, if the owner has surrendered possession to another (ie the tenant) then any interference with the quiet enjoyment of the property by the tenant in lawful possession is unlawful.

Similar principles apply to real property as well as to personal property, though the terminology would be different. Similar principles apply to sub-leasing, that is the leasing by a tenant in possession to a sub-tenant. The right to sub-lease can be expressly prohibited by the main lease.

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
