Moms who participate in Washington State's WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) coupon program may lose their right to choose organic milk next year, a product that's been on the approved food list since 2002. The Washington State Health Department is changing its rules in light of hard economic times. In 2009, proposed changes to the list would include the qualifier "non-organic" for some foods, including fruit juices, peanut butter, cheese, and baby cereals. To their credit, the list will still include organic fresh fruits and vegetables, a brand of organic bread, and some organic grains, like brown rice. In fact, Washington State has been ahead of most other WIC programs when it comes to including organic food. Montana is another state that allows WIC participants to go organic, though it was under fire last year for similar proposals to cut these products. Sure, organic milk costs nearly twice as much as conventional milk these days for various reasons; and, yes, programs like WIC may need boundaries to survive. But saying that a mom can't use her coupons for organic milk, when children are more vulnerable to pesticide residues and the presence of hormones in livestock products, seems unfair and ill-considered. It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.
Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
Organics in general are better because they contain less chemicals, but not even all organics are danger-proof. People need to always monitor their babies after feedings for any strangle behavior that might be a sign of possible sickness. This is just a cautionary note.
