Biotech firms are promising to deliver drought-resistant crops. The New York Times reports that not everyone is convinced. "Probably no one has found the magic gene yet," said Jian-Kang Zhu, professor of plant biology at the University of California, Riverside. "Probably there is no magic gene." Pakistan's government will purchase Bt cotton from Monsanto. Apparently, the seeds need to go through a one-year trial before they're introduced commercially. Haven't they heard about their neighbor's experience with transgenic cotton? The Institute for Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA) in Chile has identified contaminated conventional corn growing near transgenic corn. INTA says the transgenic corn is not approved by Chile's Agriculture and Livestock Service. Lake County, California is poised to join the growing list of non-GMO counties in the U.S. The Board of Supervisors voted 3 - 2 on an ordinance that would ban transgenic crop plantings. For other local initiatives, click here. The County Council of Hawaii Island voted to ban transgenic coffee and taro. The legislation covers this island only (also known as Big Island) and serves as a moratorium on all research and commercial planting of transgenic coffee and taro (no time limit was established). The Monsanto Company is fighting a proposal to amend its corporate bylaws to "support and defend the Consitutution of the United States." One investment firm said, "Americans should also want to be assured that Monsanto's directors are not antagonistic to the ideals and principles the Constitution espouses." Um, yeah, we'd hope so. PUBLIC COMMENT OPPORTUNITIES: USDA is now accepting public comments on several proposed rules specific to transgenic crops. 1. USDA wants to approve transgenic papaya in Florida. Transgenic papaya has been grown in Hawaii for years, and has led to serious contamination events of organic and conventional papaya. There is currently no transgenic papaya grown in the U.S. outside of Hawaii. The comment period ends Nov. 3. Submit comments here. Learn more here. 2.
