| Cadbury Seeks Gold At 2012 Olympics |

This week, Cadbury signed on to be a major sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic Games, hefting out £20 million (about $32 million) to buy the the right to drizzle the Olympic logo all over their chocolatey products. The National Center for Obesity in the United Kingdom touts the unremarkable idea that the Cadbury Olympic sponsorship will push children to eat more unhealthy foods. Cadbury appears comfortable with the irony of partnerships between candy and healthy pursuits – in the past the company egged on children to eat chocolate by offering sports equipment to those who brought candy wrappers into school. The United Kingdom has normally been on the offensive in taking on obesity - earlier this year the government announced it would be spending £372 million (about $590 million) on an anti-obesity campaign. But in defense of his decision, London 2012 chief executive Paul Deighton said, "Previous games have had chocolate and confectionery suppliers, and like most sporting events confectionery is available to buy at Olympic games.” And really, Cadbury shouldn’t be singled out for inappropriate sponsorship – what about McDonalds or Coke?
