A scientific advisory panel says FDA ignored "scores of studies" that linked bisphenol A (BPA) to prostate cancer and other health problems in animals when it published a risk assessment of the chemical last month. The agency has long been criticized for depending on industry-funded studies in safety analyses, but goodness, some of the agency's own scientists published a report with the U.S. National Institutes of Health in April that said BPA might be harmful to children's brains and reproductive organs. The panel concluded that FDA's margin of safety is "inadequate." The safety of BPA -- a chemical used to harden plastic in food containers, baby bottles, plastic linings of food cans, among other things -- has been the subject of debate for months. Canada banned BPA from baby bottles earlier this year, and three U.S. state attorneys general recently called on American baby bottle makers to phase the chemical out of their products. And while health risks associated with BPA are of serious concern, what's equally troubling is FDA's disregard for relevant studies. Apparently, the lead researcher of FDA's BPA study accepted $5 million from a donor with a vested interest in the chemical. What will FDA ignore next? Source: Washington Post
