Genetically engineered salmon were central to the biotech debate several years ago, and now with FDA's recent proposal for regulating fish and other transgenic animals, they're back on the radar of concerned eaters. The environmental implications of raising salmon engineered to grow 10 to 30 times faster than native salmon are hard to argue against. Transgenic fish that escape from pens in open waters will pass on genetic traits and out-compete native species. Their presence will only expand once released. It's like pollution. Only, biological pollution can't be reversed. Purdue University researchers found that transgenic fish could bring extinction to a native fish population within 40 generations. Aqua Bounty Technologies, the developers of transgenic salmon, says it's taking precautions by making these "super salmon" sterile. But experts say the sterilization process is imperfect. Even a few escaped non-sterile fish can wreak havoc on wild populations over time. And sterile salmon will still out-compete native salmon. In 2004, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences said that no method of containment or sterilization is foolproof. In 2002, a successful campaign led to more than 200 restaurants, grocery chains, and seafood distributors signing a pledge not to sell or purchase transgenic fish. And in 2005, Alaska passed legislation requiring mandatory labeling for all genetically engineered fish and shellfish. The comment period on FDA's proposal is open until November 18.
