Organic Farming Promises Hold Water PDF Print E-mail

Agriculture is the largest consumer of water. In California, for example, 80 percent of the water drawn for state projects is used in farming. The remaining 20 percent is divided between residential, industrial, and commercial use.

And while many agree that organic farming is better for the planet because these systems encourage careful soil management and discourage harmful inputs, like synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, another environmental benefit that's not often talked about is this: organic farming uses less water than conventional operations.

One study conducted by Cornell University showed that organic farming produced the same corn and soybean yields as conventional systems but used 30 percent less energy and water. And in India, organic rice farmers have found that using less water just makes financial and ecological sense. Their high yields acquired through using less water were cited in a 2007 study by the World Wildlife Foundation.

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
