USDA may soon approve a transgenic corn variety meant for ethanol production and not food. If you want to weigh in, today is the deadline for submitting public comments (scroll to the bottom for the link). We recommend you ask USDA to perform an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) so the agency can fully examine the environmental, economic and human health concerns related to the commercialization of the nation's first industrial corn variety. For starters, history has shown us that it's hard, if not impossible, to segregate different grain varieties in the production and distribution chain. Varieties unintended for the human food supply inevitably get there as evidenced with rice and corn. Ethanol has its own debate, but that aside, USDA shouldn't release this variety until its deemed safe in cases of accidental consumption, especially allergenicity concerns, since a new form of alpha amylase (an enzyme) that hasn't been proven safe through independent testing would be introduced. The agency continues to rely on the biotech industry's own data, a voluntary approach that has left environmental and economic devastation in the wake of weak regulations. USDA just re-opened the comment period for another 60 days. We gave you our two cents here. USDA's Office of Inspector General says the agency doesn't have an import control policy in place to regulate imported transgenic animals. And its policy on importing other nations' biotech crops could quickly become outdated, it reports. In 2005, the same Office reported that USDA's current regulations, policies and procedures don't go far enough to ensure the safe introduciton of agricultural biotechnology (opens PDF). Two strikes, USDA. At least the FDA says it's committed to a more "transparent process" for the regulation of transgenic animals. Transgenic canola varieties in Australia yielded no better -- actually a bit less -- than their conventional counterparts, says the Grains Research and Development Council. Monsanto says its first drought-tolerant corn is in its last phase of testing before commercialization. It could be in fields as soon as 2012. The biotech behemoth also reports that biotech wheat is not a research priority. Cambodia's import of GMOs are out of control of the authorities, says the technical adviser for the Ministry of Environment.
