Beefy Brewer Eats What Skinny Bitch Tells Him To PDF Print E-mail

Baseball season starts tomorrow and yes I will be setting my alarm for 4:00 am to catch the Red Sox game in Japan. Yup, Japan. (And the NFL is heading to England. But globalized sports are not the subject of this post.)

Prince Fielder, star first baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers and the youngest MLB player to rack up 50 homers in a season (at age 23), has very publicly taken the vows of vegetarianism this opening season.

Even though vegetarianism is increasingly considered a sexy trait, denouncing meat in the sausage heartland can be dangerous. But Fielder is committed to his decision, which he made after picking up his wife’s book, “Skinny Bitch: A No-Nonsense, Tough Love Guide for Savvy Girls Who Want to Stop Eating Crap and Start Looking Fabulous.” Fielder said that he was disgusted by the descriptions of slaughterhouses.

Fans and journalists have their panties in a bundle over the announcement because they’re scared Fielder won’t be the same heavy hitter when he’s juiced up with wheatgrass and tempeh sandwiches. The hubbub highlights the ongoing debate over whether or not a vegetarian diet can be complete.

Nutritionists will answer a qualified yes to this, because vegetarian diets, and particularly vegan diets, need to be considered and managed more carefully than a meat diet.

All three of us here at Envirovore eat meat, but we support the Prince in his vegetable-going ways, and we hope that his MLB notoriety might assist him in encouraging people to think twice about the history of whatever it is that they are putting in their mouths.

It's always nice to see athletes embrace vegetarianism. I hope that unlike Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs, who proclaimed himself a vegan that eats fish and chicken sometimes, Prince actually abides by the label as long as he labels himself as such.

And, Skinny Bitch makes me cringe. Another diet book no one needs.

I've been vegan for about a year, and I feel that I had a lot more managing to do when I was eating meat, dairy and eggs. I take a multivitamin, and eat a well- rounded and varied diet of fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds and grains. As a meat-eater, I had to worry about fat, cholesterol, and the slew of antibiotics, growth hormone and other cruddy stuff that goes into meat and animal products. There so much less worry and management that goes in to my food choices now.

Lorian,

Unfortunately, multivitamin really does not cut it when it comes to adequate micronutrient intake especially in a woman.

The main problems are in regards to Iron (RDA: 18mg/day) and Calcium (RDA: 1000mg/day). Although a multi should cover the Iron, but absorption will be less than 100%. A combination of beans and other food stuffs will help, but achieving the recommended 18mg can often be tough.

As for calcium, vitamins can contain anywhere from 1/10 to 1/3 of daily recommended calcium. And, fortified soy products contain a variable amount of calcium due to processing and the distrubution of the calcium pellet throughout the entire beverage.

Furthermore, often consumption of certain foods that enhance absorption of one product (i.e Fe and Vit C) can hamper the absorption of other vitamins.

Finally, it's important to combines different food sources to complete the profile of the 9 essential amino acids.

Obviously healthy veganism can be achieved, but I think that it takes a bit more thought and dedication than popping a multi each day and going on your way.

Good luck in your quest, but be careful.

Skinny Bitch is an amazing book! It looks at first glance like a gimmick, but it's unlike any other. It's well-researched, informative truth in a very concise and entertaining book that is able to be read in a short amount of time [therefore not daunting to the average person who doesn't read much] and is absolutely hilarious. It's only fault is the author's dedication to promoting soy-based substitution products for new veg*ns and the fact that there is no equivalent book for males - Skinny Bastard, perhaps?

It's fantastic to see yet another sports start adopt and promote vegetarianism and I'm sure he'll be just as successful as all the others. He can afford a good nutritionist, which will be a boon to his success within this diet/lifestyle, for sure.

I think it's ridiculous that the assumption is he will be less of a heavy hitter. It doesn't sound like he's allowing adequate time for his body to adjust to the new diet in terms of the season times, but if he works closely with a learned nutritionist, I don't foresee many problems. There are countless successful vegetarian athletes, and even many weightlifting champions are vegan.

It's absolutely wonderful to see someone with such compassion, dedication, and bravery [it does take all these things] in this sport. Now if we could just toss that book around in football circles...

Have you actually read the book? I can't imagine you would say that if you have.
aaron     | 209.6.225.xxx | 2008-03-25 11:56:38
The title and cover is what makes me cringe.

Both play to the lowest common denominator. The title glamorizes being skinny while showing a cartoon figure of a woman, who if was real would have had to have a few ribs removed and would currently be fed through a tube. It also glamorizes the word bitch and its association with women.

People can say what, write, and draw what they want but the instant message it sends is a poor one.

That being said, I have not read it, but I will do so in the near future because everything deserves a fair shake.

I get your point but I'm going to assume you don't have a whole lot of experience with other types of diet books. This book is definitely marketed towards a specific audience and while it received criticism for have an "agenda", it is probably one of the most intelligent and scientific books many people within that audience will read.

It didn't teach me very many new things, because I've read about every similar book that's come out for quite a long time, and I can tell you flat out it is not a diet book, it's a nutrition book.

They explain right in the book that the title was merely for shock value, and thank heavens because it worked. Women use the word Bitch constantly when talking to each other and it is already glamorized and barely even considered a dirty word when talking to another woman.

It is marketed towards women who will be drawn to that hip modern-art New York-looking woman. Similar art is found on books marketed to similar crowds, such as Modern Girl's Guide to Life, Three Black Skirts, The Hip Girl's Handbook, and more. It's just a specific style of art. Girls are not reading as much into it as you apparently are.

Because of this book not only will thousands of omnivores wake up about how unhealthy foods like meat and dairy really are, but also will see what they are really supporting when they buy animal products, conventional produce, and processed garbage food.

DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER. XD

You're right. I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but the authors were clearly well aware of choosing the title they did. And first impressions count!

Obviously, now I have to read the book and will once I finish the fantastic Our Band Could Be Your Life (Michael Azerrad).

I have read quite a few nutrition books and I have a degree in nutrition and am currently pursuing my masters in the subject so I have a pretty solid nutrition base.

I recommend Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food for an atypical "nutrition" book. Or just read the cover, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants."

But, you've piqued my interest and I'll make Skinny Bitch next on my reading list. I can't wait to read the chapters on protein, and dairy - I'm sure I'll be thrilled...

I love Michael Pollan's books and his presentations. My favorite nutrition book is probably The China Study. The one that first got me interested was the classic Diet for a New American by John Robbins, which is probably the most similar to SB, now that I think about it.
