Avian Flu: People, Ducks and Rice, Oh My! PDF Print E-mail

You can't blame the chicken anymore. The combination of ducks, people and rice is the most potent way to spread avian flu, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. The Thailand and Vietnam study traced avian outbreaks to ducks feeding near rice paddies. The ducks apparently pass the virus to wild birds feeding on the rice, who then can spread it elsewhere.

Researchers suggest vaccinating the domestic ducks and limiting their movement. But one key point is that it's the number of ducks and people, and the scale of rice cultivation that leads to avian outbreaks. Using small-scale duck and rice techniques (like Takao Furnuo who we mentioned in a recent post) might be one way to skirt outbreaks.

Avian flu (Influenza A) is mostly found in birds but has been reported in some humans since 1997, resulting in some deaths across Asia. People often blame chickens, but usually chickens die from the flu too quickly to allow it to spread fast.

The UNFAO findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States (PNAS). It's called "Mapping H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza risk in Southeast Asia: ducks, rice and people."

Are you an Envirovore?

It's true what our moms said...we are what we eat. In fact, it's truer than they thought. What I eat doesn't just affect me anymore, it affects all of us.

Unfortunately, the story of food can sometimes be complicated. But envirovores help each other out...which is why this blog will be bringing you news, tips, and information about food and the environment every step of the way.
